Curious or Confused About Cloth Diapers?

cloth diapersIf you are considering cloth diapering, it is first important to “tune out the noise” said Kim Rosas, from Dirty Diaper Laundry at our recent BabyFest expo.

Wise words.

The current sheer volume of information and opinions about cloth diapering can be overwhelming for parents. You have brands telling you different things, let alone public forums and Facebook groups. Then you have all in ones, all in twos, pockets, pre-folds and varying washing rules to get your head around….

It can sometimes feel like another language.

It can feel like people are talking at you and not listening to you.

And more than often, it can feel like another mini parenting battlefield.

For those who are considering cloth, perhaps you’ve heard the following once or twice….or maybe even had these thoughts yourself?

“Oh, the smell is worse!”

“They’re difficult and take hours to wash”

“I’ve heard they’re uncomfortable”

“It’s super expensive”

“Day care won’t allow cloth diapers”

And so on.

The truth is, the cloth diaper landscape has changed so much. A lot of these negative misconceptions are now outdated. We’re not talking about your Grandma’s diapers anymore – cloth diapers are not what they once were. They can be modern, colourful, breathable, effective and practical (think simple snaps or velcro closures), as well as eco-friendly and cost effective.

Rosas was at BabyFest to tackle ongoing misconceptions about cloth. As a passionate advocate for cloth, she was keen to stress that you CAN personalize your own cloth diapering experience. It isn’t a one-size-fits-all kind of system. If you want to do it, you can choose a way that makes YOU comfortable and suits YOUR lifestyle – even if that means doing it part time if your day care won’t do cloth.

Another favorite quote of ours from Rosas at BabyFest was when she spoke about disposables leaking:

“Whether you are using cloth or disposables, you’re dealing with poop anyway. That’s just a fact. With cloth, you get to choose your involvement with poop.  But when you use disposable diapers, it chooses you!”

An interesting way to look at it, huh?

Now we don’t preach right or wrong ways at Babies in Bloom – we support YOUR way. We all have our reasons for what suits us and our families’ best. If cloth diapers aren’t for you, no worries. There is no judgement here. But for those who are interested, or those currently feeling a little intimidated or confused by cloth, then why not  join our Cloth Diapering 101 class at the Babies in Bloom Boutique?

On the first Saturday of the month at 11am, we connect parents and parents-to-be that want to use cloth, or who are simply cloth curious, with parents who have chosen cloth. It’s your chance to ask the questions and hear real first-hand experiences of different brands and different styles – the good and the bad. This isn’t about a hard product sell. We have one simple goal – to listen and help you make sense of all the “noise”.

Hope to see you there!

Surviving Toddler Tantrums

TantrumDid you hear about the mom in the UK who was asked to leave a department store because her toddler was having a tantrum? She was literally mid trying to calm her daughter down (we’ve all been there right?!) when a member of staff approached her and made her leave the shop.

Can you believe that? Like a tantrum is the easiest or most fun part of any parent’s day! This poor mom really didn’t need that on top of a hysterical 16 month old. It may have happened many thousands of miles away, but our hearts went out to that mama as soon as we heard this story.

The UK store, called John Lewis, has since apologized and issued a statement saying: “We are very sorry that Mrs. Robinson was upset after visiting our shop and have arranged for a delivery of flowers.” Regarding the member of staff who asked her to vacate the premises they added: “We are speaking to him about what happened and how we could have been more sympathetic to Mrs. Robinson and her daughter.”

We all know that toddlers come with bad reputations –cue the all too negative phrases like ‘Terrible Twos’ and ‘Three-nagers’ The simple truth is toddlers and tantrums just go hand in hand. We accept it. We take a deep breath, we dig deep and we deal with it as best we can.

But even if we deal with tantrums in the most respectful and supportive manner, it doesn’t mean it will STOP!  Anyone with a toddler will know that you can be absolutely powerless in a tantrum situation – and more than often, clueless as to what even started it.

If it is a public tantrum, you can become acutely aware of people around you and hyper paranoid of their judgements. Sometimes tantrums can make you can feel like a horrible mom. Sometimes you can feel defeated. Sometimes just plain embarrassment. But it’s always important we remember that this is normal and this too shall pass.  They are not being naughty, manipulative or bad – they are just being toddlers.

And minutes after a tantrum, your little one will no doubt flash you that award winning smile that makes your heart melt. They’ll maybe tell you they love you, hug you, or will start laughing hysterically at something else that’s caught their eye. Or maybe they’ll finally fall sound asleep. Phew, it’s over. All is forgiven and forgotten. Until next time.

BabyFest 2016: The Highlights

A BIG thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday for BabyFest 2016. We were so thrilled to meet you, your bumps, your partners and your little ones.

With everything from advice and support on birthing options, babywearing and breastfeeding, to natural baby care products, fresh local produce and a fun photo booth, we’re hoping you not only left with all your essentials, but also left feeling inspired, excited and empowered. Oh, and full of yummy treats from our local food trucks too of course!

If you couldn’t make it down to us this time, don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here are a few expo highlights for you:

Dr KimSUPPORT FROM THE VERY START: Those eight weeks before your first prenatal check can feel like forever right? And what about all those questions and worries you have week on week – they seem to keep growing as fast as you’re growing don’t they?

Dr Kim Van Dusen from The Parentologist took to the stage to talk about the importance of a support system, not just after the arrival of your little one, but from the very moment you find out you’re pregnant – whatever stage it might be. Dr Kim runs a weekly ‘Behind the Bump’ group at Babies in Bloom to help moms-to-be and new moms up to 12 weeks postpartum, to feel confident, connected and supported the whole way through their journey. For more details on this group, visit our calendar page here.

fashioIRRESISTIBLE FASHION: How adorable are these handmade leather moccasins from Cage and Lantern?

How clever are these no snap, no zipper onesies from EZONEZ?

And look at how fun these onesies burritos from Baby’s Got Soul are.

This year’s expo was just bursting with cool, funky and colorful fashions.

And speaking of color….

cloth diapersMYTHBUSTING: CLOTH DIAPERS

Just LOOK at this wall of color.

Beautiful, huh? Lucky Diapers, Z Creationz and GroVia were once again out to prove that cloth diapers are far from dull with their fun eco-friendly designs and hands on demos, while Spray Pal showcased just how easy it can be to keep cloth diapers clean.

The very funny and captivating Kim Rosas, from Dirty Diaper Laundry also entertained visitors with her frank talk on cloth diapering,  addressing common misconceptions around cloth diapers – from the ‘yuck’ factor and inconvenience, to concerns over whether cloth bindingdiapers can delay walking in infants. We’d highly recommending checking out her website –there is nothing this advocate doesn’t know about cloth diapers!

BENGKUNG BINDING: We loved this example of belly binding on the In Due Season Doula Services stand. As well as promoting VBAC support, they were there highlighting the possible recovery benefits of binding postpartum, which you can find in detail on their website.

babywearing1 - CopyBABY WEARING: In addition to Babywearing San Diego celebrating the physical and emotional benefits of babywearing on their stand, Ali and Karen, our babywearing consultants from the Babies in Bloom boutique, also took to the stage to talk about, and demo, the different kinds of carriers out there, from a ring sling, wrap and mei tai carrier to the more structured ones available on the market.

But don’t worry if you missed it, you can still come in to the boutique with your questions, schedule a private consultation or join the monthly Babywearing 101 class – the second Saturday of each month at 11am.

MEET THE MIDWIVES: This was without doubt our busiest talk of the day. Some of Babies in Bloom’s favorite midwives held a lively Q&A session answering anything and everything, from how actively involved Dad can be in the delivery, to the different types of birthing experiences available, be it in hospital, a birth center or home.  It was a really wonderful and warming opportunity for parents to air any concerns they might have and be reassured by these charismatic experts. No question was a stupid question. You know when you can just tell when someone LOVES their job! These ladies definitely do!

SLEEP COACHING – For many parents, Jen Varela, walks on water. A certified gentle sleep coach, Jen closed the show on a high with her top tips on how to get your baby better sleep habits. For those that missed her, she also runs workshops at Babies in Bloom, so check our calendar for future dates. It’s never too late – if you are struggling with sleep patterns and routines, a solution is out there for you.

UNTIL NEXT YEAR…

If we could go on talking about each and every stand that added such positive energy and expertise to this year’s event, we would! It was a strong team effort by all companies involved to deliver such an inspiring range of products, information and support to growing families in our community. A full list of our exhibitors can be found here.

BabyFest proudly celebrates the wealth of options available to parents today and every parent or parent-to-be’s right to choose which one is best suited to them and their family. No judgement, just support. Always.
