How to Thank Your Midwife

Gift Ideas for the Midwife in Your Life

This Cinco de Mayo, we have something extra special to celebrate — the International Day of the Midwife!

If you are lucky enough to know and love a midwife, now is the time to remind them a little more how much they mean to you.

Midwifery, postpartum

We asked a few of our favorite local midwives for some suggestions, and we had a few ideas ourselves. Read on below for some creative and useful ways to say a big THANK YOU to midwives.

1. Treat them to a Massage

Midwives work round the clock, overnight, and spend a good deal of time on the move. No matter how calm and relaxed your midwife might make you feel, make no mistake, their work is high stakes and demanding. They don’t complain though because they love what they do and YOU! The gift of some quiet time, touch therapy, and tranquility is just what the midwife ordered.

2. Coffee, tea, get them caffeine

Did we mention the long hours and sleepless nights? Midwives and new parents have something in common, sleep can be hard to come by in this industry. Babies come when they come and that means a midwife has to be ready at a moment’s notice. Between births, midwives also have postpartum checks, prenatal exams, and other commitments. How do they find the energy? While some may thrive on the pure endorphins and adrenaline that birth brings, others might like some caffeine. A pound of coffee, a tin of tea, or a gift card to your local coffee shop is sure to perk your midwife right up.

3. Make a Healthy Snack Basket

Midwife, thank you, birth

You know that part about your midwife being on the go, all the time? They need more than gas in their car to fuel them day to day (Honorable Mention: Gas Station Gift Card?). Pack your midwife a nice basket full of some healthy, natural snack items to go along with any other trinkets you like. Anything that your midwife can grab on the go is a sure fire way to keep them sharp, prevent hangry episodes, and show them you care about their well-being just as much as they care about yours.

4. Show Off Your Creativity

Are you an artist, jewelry maker, florist, photographer? Do you make beautiful pottery or woven textiles? Now is the time to use your skills to create a one-of-a-kind symbol of your gratitude and thank your midwife. Frame a painting of your own for your midwife to hang in her office, create a charm for her to wear on a necklace. They will appreciate the time and personal touch you put into thanking them, and will never forget you.

5. Join CFAM – California Families for Access to Midwives

Midwifery care is not the standard in our country, and because of that, legislative developments can make or break a midwife’s ability to practice from state to state. California Families for Access to Midwives (CFAM) is a network for mothers, fathers, families, and their communities who advocate for safe, affordable and healthy birth options. By joining CFAM’s mailing list, you can stay informed about important legislative action, and learn about ways you can help support licensed midwives in California. Let’s show our midwives that we are willing to help where and when it matters.
