Which is Best? Double Stroller or a Stroller Wagon

6 minute read

Maybe you’re expecting twins… Or you’re about to welcome home your second baby… Or maybe you already have two little ones and your arms are tired from carrying your children from place to place!

Not every family needs a double stroller or stroller wagon. Yet, many parents find one or the other to be super helpful when it comes to transporting multiple kiddos.

But which is best for you and your family?

It’s important to think about your family’s unique needs, environment and lifestyle when it comes to deciding whether you need a double stroller or stroller wagon. (Some families even decide to get both!)

We’re here to help you sort through all the options to find the perfect transportation for your little ones.

Wagon vs. Double Stroller: What’s the Difference?

Remember the old school Radio Flyer wagons? A stroller wagon is the modern version! A stroller wagon is an open-top baby carrier that can accommodate two to four children depending on the make and model.

With their open design, your kiddos can sit where they’d like, move around, and they’re great for accommodating backpacks, blankets, and anything else you need to carry. Wagons can are generally used for children between the ages of 1 and 5 (but some models have options to accommodate younger babies).

A double stroller is similar to a standard stroller, but it has an additional seat so that you can push two children. The seats of a double stroller may be side-by-side, one in front of the other, and there are convertible options as well.

Double strollers are great for transporting kids up to 5 years of age. You can find a wide variety of travel options, jogging varieties and conventional double strollers.

Things to Consider When Buying Double Stroller or Stroller Wagon:

Every family’s budget, preferences, and needs will be a little different. That’s why it’s important to think about the pros and cons of getting a double stroller vs. a stroller wagon. Let’s take a look at some of the top factors to consider.

Terrain

First, you’ll want to think about where you’ll be using the stroller. Does your family go for daily neighborhood walks? Do you like to hop in the car and go for a hike on the weekends? If you plan to take your kids on a variety of outdoor adventures, you may want to opt for an all-terrain double stroller. Double-strollers are usually easier to navigate and will allow you to push, pull, and turn your little ones with ease. (They’re also great for navigating the grocery store too!).

On the other hand, if you like to stroll around the park or head to your local zoo…a stroller wagon may be a perfect fit! They are great for family trips where you can expect lots of sidewalks, flat terrain, and paved areas. Plus your kids will have a blast being able to easily move around to check out the fun scenery around them.

Portability

The weight, size, and foldability of a double stroller or stroller wagon is an important factor to consider. Double strollers generally have a simple one or two-step folding process, making it an ideal choice if you need to store it in a small area or transport it in the trunk of a small car.

A double stroller may also be lighter and easier to carry if you plan to use public transit or hop on an airplane.

But if you have ample storage space — like a large garage — and a larger car, a stroller wagon may be the perfect choice for your family. Plus you can carry more kiddos and gear while you’re out and about!

Storage

Many double strollers have a large storage basket beneath the seats — perfect for stashing your diaper bag, picnic blanket, and other necessities. They’ve thought it through when it comes to what busy parents need — with extra pockets and amazing accessories like cup holders, snack trays, and more!

Stroller wagons are known for their great storage! Especially if you’re only carrying one kiddo — which will give you plenty of room in the open design to stash away anything that you need for your outing. They also have great pockets and some come with an extra basket.

Longevity

Whether you decide to invest in a double stroller or stroller wagon (or both!), they’ll both last well through your child’s toddler years. Many families can use either option until their kids are 5 years old.

But it’s important to know that some kids get so excited to walk, run, and move on their own, that they may lose interest in riding in a stroller or stroller wagon. The seats of a stroller may start to feel small and confining. Or you may find your little one constantly jumping out of your stroller wagon to check out the latest sight.

By age five, it may be time to switch to a scooter or tricycle

Safety

Both double strollers and stroller wagons have excellent safety features for young kiddos.

Most double strollers come with five-point safety harnesses to keep your little ones safe and secure. But if you need to transport an infant, make sure your double stroller or stroller wagon has the capability to attach your baby’s car seat or bassinet.

Stroller wagons may be more challenging for children under the age of one, as they are still learning to sit and control their movements at this age. Even if your little one is sitting independently, they may benefit from a five-point safety harness (which some stroller wagons can accommodate!)

It’s important to read the safety instructions thoroughly and pay attention to the size and weight limitations.
